Although there is a great deal of variation in what paramedics are trained and permitted to do from region to region within New York State, Greene EMS Paramedics are among the top trained in the region, their skills include:
All skills performed by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) at the Basic Life Support level.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support – (ACLS) such as:
Manual defibrillation;
Synchronized cardioversion;
Transcutaneous pacing;
Electrocardiogram monitoring and interpretation
12-lead ECG (Field Recognition of a Heart Attack): with this capability patients may go directly to the cathertization lab from the scene (bypassing the ER because of the medics skill at interpreting STEMI’s or a “Heart Attack”. This has saved critical time in many cases and resulted in many lives saved.


Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Trauma care: Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic or Advanced Trauma Life Support (BTLS or ATLS)

Basic and advanced airway management, including:
Endotracheal and nasotracheal intubation


Esophageal intubation using an EOA (now discontinued) or a CombiTube
Retrograde intubation;
Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) – One of only 3 agencies in the 6 county region approved to perform RSI


Surgical cricothyroidotomy or needle cricothyrotomy/transtracheal jet insufflation

Vascular access for medication administration and fluid resuscitation via several routes:
Peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulation;
Intraosseous (IO) cannulation (placement of needle into marrow space of a large bone), by hand, with a drill or spring-loaded device

Pulse oximetry and capnography

Needle thoracotomy for tension pneumothorax

Glucometry (testing blood sugar) for diabetic patients

Venous blood samples

Ventilator Management

Administration of medications: via intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous, sublingual, endotracheal, oral, intranasal, intraosseous and buccal routes

 

Medication List includes:
Adenosine, Afrin, Amiodarone, Albuterol, Aspirin, Atropine, Atrovent, Benedryl, Calcium Chloride, Dextrose 50%, Dextrose 25%, Diazepam, Diltiazem(cardizem), Dopamine, Epinephrine 1:1000, Epinephrine 1:10,000, Etomidate, Lasix(furosemide), Glucagon, Haldol, Lidocaine, Magnesium Sulfate, Solumedrol, Metoprolol(lopressor), Midazolam(versed), Morphine, Naloxone(narcan), Nitroglycerin, Sodium Bicarbonate, Succinlycholine, Vecuronium, Tetracaine, and Zofran.
